(Memphis) A trio is in jail accused of stealing hundreds of dollars’ worth of jeans from a store at Wolfchase Galleria.

But they’re charged with more than theft because police say one of them pointed a gun at a security guard who tried to stop the thieves.

Some believe the crime could be gang-related.

In the last week, there have been two major thefts at Sears in Memphis.

First, at Oak Court Mall and now at Wolfchase.

In both situations, police say the thieves tried to get away with more than $1,700 worth of jeans.

Law enforcement calls it a “snatch and grab.”

“Snatch it up, grab, and run,” said police officer Chris Fowler.

The crime is about sealing hot items from department stores to make a killing on the street.

“It’s very profitable.”

Police say Keonika Davis, Raymond Turner and Julia Paige won’t be making a profit this time. They got busted with 27 pairs of jeans, an array of baby clothes and two boxes of Huggies. Shelby county deputies pulled them over on I-240 after Wolfchase called 911. Police say Davis drove the getaway car as Turner and Paige loaded-up garbage bags at Sears with hundreds of dollars’ worth of jeans. When a security guard tried to stop them, they say Turner took out a revolver and pointed it at him.

The bust happened five days after another brazen theft at Sears at Oak Court Mall. A man’s face was clearly caught on camera as he grabbed a rack of jeans and got away in a Dodge Avenger with no tags.

“It’s a source of income. Gangs like anyone else have to have a source of income,” said Fowler.

Fowler says gangs are often responsible for “snatch and grabs” and the items usually end up on street corners or in flea markets

“So, if you get a rack, 30 bucks a pop, three grand, move it on the street for $1,500,” said Fowler.

For the trio, it’s going to take much more than that for them to bond out of jail. The alleged thieves in the Wolfchase incident have now been charged with aggravated robbery.
