MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tennessee troopers said a man who thought he could use a fake officer’s ID to get out of a speeding ticket, is now behind bars.
Troopers said Quiera Carmichael was driving over 90 miles per hour and weaving in and out of traffic along I-40, near Sycamore View when he was stopped last month.
They said he told the officer who pulled him over he was with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and pulled out a picture ID that identified him as Lt. Deshawn Carmichael of the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Special Response team.
The ID had a state seal on it and in the photo Carmichael was wearing a uniform and badge.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said Carmichael is not one of their Lieutenants and the Highway Patrol confirmed he does not work for any law enforcement agency in the state.
“It’s not the first time it’s happened and it’s not the last time. But none the less, it’s very troubling when a citizen tries to define himself as a law enforcement officer,” said Chip Washington with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
WREG discovered Carmichael has no previous criminal record in Shelby County.
He was charged with criminal impersonation and criminal simulation.
He is being held on $1,000 bond.
