SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — One person was shot and another stabbed in two incidents in Cordova on Monday afternoon.

A Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said both victims are in critical condition.

The shooting was reported in the 1400 block of Marhill.

A mother in tears at the scene said she thought the boys who attacked her 17-year-old son were his friends until they robbed and shot him.

Neighbor Danielle Pointer consoled the woman before she left to see her son in the hospital.

“I have three children so I was definitely touched having to console her,” said Pointer. “I just basically told her to calm down that he’s going to make it.”

“I just know as a mother I would not wish that on anybody to have to come home and find out that my son was shot,” said Pointer.

The second incident was in the 10000 block of Delafield Avenue in Cordova. The age of that victim is not known.

Authorities believe the incidents may be related because they happened a short distance apart in the same neighborhood around 4:30 p.m.

Hearing a teen was shot in this Cordova neighborhood and another person stabbed just one block away has Pointer on edge.

“I heard two gunshots but I didn’t think anything of it because it didn’t sound like it was really close,” said Pointer. “I was concerned cause it’s usually really quiet over here. We don’t usually have any problems.”

Neighbors say these crimes are unusual in this tight knit community.

“It’s families, it’s older people and the kids are pretty close,” said Pointer.  “We all speak when we go down the street, everybody kinda recognizes everybody.”

“We keep kind of close to each other so we are able to know what’s going on,” said Pointer.
