MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two local Walgreens, along with Greater Than AIDS, have announced they would be providing free HIV testing June 25 to 27.

They told WREG it was all part of a national effort by the drugstore chain to help keep people in the community healthy.

The testing will take place at the Walgreens at 4155 South Third Street and the store at 1130 South Bellevue Boulevard.

On June 25 and June 26, testing will be 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On June 27, the testing will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to the event website, participants would get test results within 20 minutes and in some cases in just one.

“We have come so far in our understanding of HIV,” said Tina Hoff, Senior Vice President and Director of Health Communication and Media Partnerships at the Kaiser Family Foundation, on the website. “Today, there are very effective treatments that not only help people with HIV to long, healthy lives but also significantly reduce the chances of passing the virus to others. Knowing one’s status is a crucial first step.”

According to reports, one in every seven people in the country have HIV and don’t even know it.

Friends for Life Corp. and Partnership to End Aids Status Inc has teamed up with the chain store to make this event a reality.
