MATA will provide transportation to both the warming centers and the shelters. Call (901) 636-2525 if you have questions about transportation.
The Orange Mound Community Center is located at 2572 Park Avenue, the Gaston Community Center is at 1048 S. Third Street, and the Ed Rice Community Center is at 2907 Watkins Street.
Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham issued the following winter weather statement:
Winter has moved into our region and it appears we will have very cold air moving in throughout today and tonight. Our main highways seem fairly clear while some of our roads and streets remain hazardous. We STILL have very dangerous driving conditions in various areas throughout Shelby County. I am advising you to please slow down, give sufficient stopping distance between you and other drivers, approach intersections with great caution and be reminded that these driving conditions are more hazardous at night.
If you are traveling tonight, make sure you are dressed for extremely cold temps and put a blanket in the car in case you break down and become subject to the cold. You should also pack a thermos with coffee or something hot.
Finally, we need your partnership in making both welfare checks and phone calls to senior citizens who may be ill, have inadequate heating or who are living alone thus making them extremely vulnerable to these harsh conditions. If you or someone you know find themselves in a life threatening incident or exposed to these dangerous weather conditions, we encourage you to call our non-emergency number, 901-379-7625 for assistance. Let’s use common sense, be a good neighbor and remain safe.
