MEMPHIS, Tenn. –As children inside Ridgecrest Apartments headed to school  Wednesday morning, some parents were just finding out about an early morning shooting.

Authorities told WREG two people are recovering after shots were fired around 1:30 a.m.

One victim was discovered on shady Vista Drive while the other was found at an apartment on Woodcliff.

Dispatchers confirmed both victims were taken to the Regional Medical Center.

At least one of them is listed in critical condition.

“I heard the shots, it was like 4 shots.”

Angie Smith said the shots were coming from the rear of the complex and woke her up.

She said it sounded like a gunfight.

“If there was shooting they were shooting at each other because there were like two shots a piece,” she said.

This is the third double shooting WREG has covered at the Ridgecrest Apartments in the last five years.

In August 2015, some fired several shots into a crowd injuring two people.

The other happened back in March 2012.

Two men were injured in that shooting.

Several years ago a Skycop camera was installed in the middle of the complex to deter crime, but residents told WREG it doesn’t necessarily make them feel any safer.

“The kids don’t feel safe over hear still because they don’t do nothing.  Security, don’t nobody do nothing.”

In 2014, the area was declared a gang safe-zone, but residents said gang is still here.

So far, police haven’t released any details about what led to the latest shooting.

They’re asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
