HOUSTON — Two students have been killed and three other people are seriously injured after a school bus rolled off a Houston freeway overpass.
A Houston Independent School District statement said a 17-year-old girl died at the scene Tuesday morning, and another 14-year-old student died at a hospital.
The district said two other students and the bus driver were also taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
The bus was bound for Furr High School, which also operates a charter school.
Names of the victims haven’t been released.
According to the Houston Police Department, a Buick LaSabre was driving next to the bus when another vehicle began drifting into its lane. The LaSabre was trying to avoid the other car when it started drifting towards the bus.
The bus driver was trying to avoid the Buick when the accident occurred.
Guard rails were damaged. The bus rolled and landed on its side.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and the loss of one of our students,” HISD Superintendent Terry Grier told KHOU. “I ask all of the HISD community to join me in praying for all of those involved.”

Houston operates the state’s largest public school district with about 215,000 students.
