MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Memphis and eight young people made history Saturday.
The group was the first class to graduate from the TigerLIFE program, which gives students with intellectual challenges the chance to take the college course and receive their degree.
The program was the first of it’s kind in Memphis and one of the largest in the country.
The ceremony was a big moment for graduates, parents and school officials.
“I felt like a proud poppa,”said the Institute of Disability Director Maurice Williams. “I mean, these young people have stayed with me. They’ve gone through a lot, but they have done a lot. They’ve taken over 700-hours of course work. They’ve taken on 21 different regular classes.”
The Department of Developmental Services said they would now help the graduates find jobs.
