U of M will use same recruitment techniques to find new football coach

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Students at the University of Memphis told WREG having a good football team has perks.

“It brings people here and it’s just good for the city as well,” Jacob Myers, a U of M student, said.

That’s one of the reasons why so many Tiger fans were sad to see Head Coach Justin Fuente off to a new job at Virginia Tech.

Many students on campus were happy for Fuente, but said they saw the move coming.

“I kind of wasn’t surprised because when someone turns around a football team like that, you kind of expect it,” Myers told WREG.

The university is in the process of finding someone new.

“I’m a little disappointed,” Myers said. “I just hope they have a good replacement coming up. I hope they’ve been thinking about it.”

“The process that brought Justin Fuente here will be the same process that will search for his successor,” Bob Byrd, a U of M Ambassador, said.

Byrd could not talk about specifics on the process, but said corporate and university leaders on the recruitment team are going in with a championship mentality.

“I think that is the level of success to which we aspire and which we have every reason to expect will continue,” Byrd explained.
