OXFORD, Miss. — A capital murder suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting Friday in Oxford.

A Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesperson said U.S. Marshals were searching for Hunter Carlstrom, a fugitive wanted for capital murder, in Oxford around 11:30 a.m.

When Marshals confronted Carlstrom, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the team of Marshals, who returned gunfire.

The MBI spokesperson said the Marshal who was shot and Carlstrom were both taken to an area hospital.

Carlstrom was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Marshal received surgery, a source with knowledge of the investigation said, and is recovering. No other law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.
