(Memphis) A Memphis City Councilman is calling out IBEW Local 1288 spokesman and manager Bill Hawkins about having a smart meter at his Olive Branch home.

Hawkins has been an outspoken opponent of MLGW installing the smart meters in homes in Shelby County.

Memphis City Council members will likely vote on the issue in August.

“That’s all. Everyone needs to tell the truth in this debate and we have one union leader the spokesman who actually has a smart meter and has never complained about it. It’s never caught fire. It’s never been hacked and he’s never told the public that he has a smart meter in his home,” said Councilman Myron Lowery.

Representatives from IBEW Local 1288 canceled an interview with News Channel 3 on the issue and said they will hold a press conference soon.

Hawkins did say by phone that the meter on his Olive Branch home is automated and much different from the smart meters that MLGW want to install. And Hawkins said he’s tried to have the meter removed.

“He told me I opted out, in June and the utility company says no one can opt out,” said Lowery.

“This brings into question the credibility of the union spokesperson who is telling everyone don’t get a smart meter,” said Lowery.
