MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “It was a little scary living by a murder,” student Carson Rowe told WREG.

University of Memphis students were still coming to grips about a murder on Patterson.

“It was kind of weird to know it was so close to where I was living,” Griffin King, another student said.

Police arrested Antonie Hinton early Tuesday morning after he allegedly lured the man he killed to the apartment complex.

“When I drove up here to move in my apartment I honestly didn’t know what this was for,” Griffin said.

Students told WREG they were relieved police arrested someone in the murder, but said the school should have done their part in letting them know the deadly crime happened so close to campus.

“It would be nice to get one so we know what’s going on around here,” Carson said. “So we know where to go, where not to go, and be safe around Memphis.”

U of M Police Chief Bruce Harber said Sunday’s shooting did not warrant an alert.

Harber told WREG in an e-mail, “It did not occur within our ‘Clery Geography’ and, of perhaps more importance, based on the information that the parties involved were acquainted with each other, there did not appear to be a serious or continuing threat to students or employees.”

“It’s kind of uncomfortable not knowing — I mean knowing that the school doesn’t send out stuff for that. I wish they would,” King said.

Police said the shooting stemmed from a case of domestic violence after Hinton brutally beat his girlfriend.

A person who knew the beaten woman said this case wasn’t the first incident.

“Maybe about a month ago she came in and her face was all battered up. She told us she was in a car accident. I knew she wasn’t,” an unidentified daycare owner said.

The woman, whose identity WREG agreed to hide, wished she reported the violence.

“I saw her fear on Friday and I felt bad after I found out what happened- that I didn’t address it in the proper way,” the woman said.

Hinton is due in court Wednesday morning.

It is worth mentioning that the University of Memphis has had the lowest crime rate among the ten large campuses in the state for the past two years (2013 and 2014).

Additionally, crime on U of M campuses is down 23%.
