Update On MPD Officer Who Was Killed & Officer Who Was Shot

(Memphis) Memphis Police officer Martoiya Lang is dead after being shot.

Lang and another officer were shot this morning serving a drug related search warrant at 1062 Mendenhall Cove at 8 a.m. this morning.

A 21-year-old suspect is being treated at The MED.

Officer Lang, who has been with MPD since 2003, has four small children.

Officer William Vrooman was treated and released.

Five MPD officers have been shot since January of 2012.

Police Director Toney Armstrong said, “So often we get side tracked with some of the other things that go on, we have an officer who goes out and does something inappropriate and it gets all the media attention. But the end of the day, we have officers like this officer who leaves her small kids at home, come put it all on the line.”

Mayor A C Wharton added, “On behalf of the citizens of our city, we offer our prayers to the families, our condolences, I want to say thanks to the brave officers, men and women, who as we see, even at this early hour on a bright day like this who have to enter into some of the darkest of circumstances, but they are willing.”
