MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A video is going viral of a Memphis police officer hitting a man over and over again near the Hickory Ridge Town Center on Friday evening.
The video shows the police officer hitting a man with a baton. The suspect was on the ground, but the officer continued to strike him.
The officers that were on the scene called for backup as the crowd watching started to grow. Some who watched also recorded the encounter on their cellphones.
Memphis Police told WREG it all started at Emerald Park Apartments, where Jose Deillado tried to break into a family’s home.
Officers said he forced his way in. A man inside the apartment stabbed him before he could run away.
When officers caught up with the suspect, they said he started wrestling with them and even bit one of the officers on scene.
Police told us they are aware of the video. They said an internal affairs investigation is underway.
The question internal affairs investigators must answer is: Did these officers do their job, or did they take it too far?
