MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Loved ones honored the life of a 2-year-old shooting victim who was killed in Orange Mound on Friday.

Blue and orange balloons were released into the sky on Saturday, a day after the fatal shooting of 2-year-old Jamarion Payne.

The vigil and balloon release were held in the 700 block of Josephine Street, where Jamarion was killed.

Family members tell WREG the toddler was shot while playing catch outside with his uncle.

The toddler was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he sadly died from his injuries.

“It’s careless, and they don’t care about innocent lives, they don’t care who they take out, who they shoot, and it’s senseless, to me it is,” Jamarion’s aunt Rittie Marshall told WREG on Friday.

At the vigil, Jamarion’s mother, Kermiracle Futrell, spoke about the pain she’s now living with.

“I hate to let him go. I’m not ready to let him go,” she said. “I’m angry, I’m frustrated, I’m hurt. I’m so hurt. I just want whoever did this to my baby to pay. I just want them to pay.”

So far, no one has been arrested for the deadly shooting.

Memphis Police are asking anyone with nearby surveillance videos to contact them.

On Friday, Colonel Willie Mathena called on the community to stop the gun violence.

During a public forum on Saturday, Mayor Paul Young shared a similar message.

“This has been a bad week with regards to violence in our city. Two young people [were] tragically lost,” Young said. “I mean one, I think was a drowning incident, the other was a baby that was shot in a drive-by shooting and it’s unacceptable. It’s something that our community is fighting hard against.”
