GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Once again Germantown police are roping off another home with crime scene tape.

For the second time in a week, violent crime struck in a Mid-South suburb that prides itself on keeping crime to a minimum.

Germantown police were called Friday morning to the 7900 block of Elm Leaf Drive to a deadly domestic disturbance.

Investigators are looking into the circumstances that led to the death of the man at the home and left a woman in critical condition.

“Totally unusual to see, this totally unusual. That’s why I stopped,” Germantown resident Chris Smith said.

Earlier this week, Germantown cops investigated a burglary in the 1800 block of River Valley Drive. A 13-year-old girl was home and hid in a closet to call her father to tell him two men had just broken in.

In April, a man pulled a gun on a woman washing her car in her driveway. He wanted her purse.

In January, an elderly couple was robbed at gunpoint inside their home on Great Oaks Road, and in a separate incident in the same month, someone broke into a home in the gated Nottaway subdivision and robbed an older couple of their cash and jewelry.

“I am cautious in the evening,” Germantown resident Paula Smith said. “We stay around the house. It’s just being cautious.”

Despite these violent incidents this year, crime for the last three years in Germantown is down, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

There has not been a murder in the city since 2013, but there is a small increase in robberies. Aggravated assaults remain about the same. Property crimes such as burglaries and auto thefts are actually down.

Germantown Police would not comment on how these latest incidents will affect the crime rate in 2015. Regardless, residents say they won’t live in fear.

“I think you just need to get out and know all your neighbors, so I think that’s important,” Paula Smith said.
