MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Memphis Police Lieutenant found himself on the wrong side of the law.
He’s wanted for theft and two counts of official misconduct.
Mike McCord was accused of embezzlement back in February.
Since then he retired from the force but that wasn’t the first time he was investigated.
“I mean they live right there. I used to ride my horse in their backyard and to hear he’s being arrested? It’s like an in your backyard kind of thing. You never think it’s going to happen to people you know,” said Deanna Long.
Long grew up around the former police Lieutenant.
She said he was a nice guy.
“Very shocking that he is going to be arrested now,” said Long.
McCord is wanted for theft and two counts of official misconduct.
The DA’s Office told us he was accused of overtime fraud when he worked the Memphis Police Department, but they couldn’t give us specifics about the case.
No one answered the door at McCord’s Millington home on Friday either.
Last check the Sheriff’s Office said they didn’t know where he is.
McCord had been with MPD since 1990 and had a thick personnel file that showed several investigations.
In 2007 he was accused of police brutality.
His file also showed he lied about an officer being in court when he really wasn’t.
At one time he was fired from the department but the Memphis Civil Services Commission gave him his job back.
Those in the community said the news was disappointing and they expected more of an officer of the law.
“Everybody is a human being and they all have the right to choose what they wanna do and it sounds like in this case there were some wrong choices,” said John Cathey.
The District Attorney’s Office said anyone that sees McCord should call law enforcement.
