MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Chapter of the NAACP marched through the streets of downtown Memphis Saturday morning to protest the killing of George Floyd and police brutality.
Dozens of people, including local elected officials, participated in the march that started at the Church of God in Christ Temple of Deliverance and ended at ‘I Am A Man’ Plaza.
Councilwoman Rhonda Logan was one of the elected officials who took to the streets with citizens.
“A lot of people have been concerned but in silence,” Logan said. “Now they are able to add their voice to the collective voice and be heard.”
One woman says she unexpectedly joined the march while she was downtown.
“We’re just going to go down to the ‘I Am A Man’ plaza and we are going to do our own peaceful protest,” Christin Jackson Graves said. “We pulled up and parked and this group of people started walking by so we just joined them.”
Memphis police helped with the protest this morning by blocking off roads to protect demonstrators as they marched.
