WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — The West Memphis School District dismissed classes at noon Friday due to freezing rain and slick roads.
It was one of few districts that tried to hold classes Friday.
WREG was there when students left L.R. Jackson Elementary at noon.
One mother said she called her son’s school around 10 a.m. when weather conditions worsened, but the school couldn’t tell her about any plans to close.
“When it was raining, it was sticking, and it was like freezing on the cars, on the windows,” parent Denise Bass said.
Bass said she thinks the district waited too long to call it quits.
Another woman picking up her grandchildren disagreed and said she thought the noon dismissal was appropriate.
WREG called the school district shortly after noon, and the person who answered the phone said most administrators had left for the day. He explained that the district made the decision to dismiss early for safety reasons.
He also said the district has an automatic phone system to contact parents in cases like this.
