Westy’s shooting victims showered with support as they recover in hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In a world with so much hate, a community showed love.

“It’s a counter to the bad. People are good,” Jake Schorr said.

Among the music, food, and booze, people where at Westy’s in the Pinch District for two men and one reason.

“The object is to collect money to help the victims,” Schorr told WREG.

It was a long three weeks ago when Joshua Walton and Al Sakan were shot outside of Westy’s on the same night Christopher Dickens was gunned down at Bass Pro.

Officer Verdell Smith was also run over and killed on Beale Street by Justin Welch, according to police.

“It’s been a roller coaster. A major roller coaster,” Nova Walton said.

Nova Walton witnessed the Westy’s shooting and has been in the hospital since day one.

She said Josh is still in critical condition but is doing better than before.

“He can smile. He can open his eyes,” Walton described. “He’ll wink. He’ll stick his tongue out, raise his hands up some.”

Sakan is in serious condition.

He moved to the Mid-South from a war-torn Syria only to be shot on the streets of Memphis.

“A happy human being to being to be in the United States of America. He loves life,” Schorr said.

The community rallied around them and is doing all it can to let loved ones know they are not in this fight alone.

“They need help. We’re going to help them,” Schorr explained.

“Wow. Just wow. I didn’t expect nothing like this,” Walton told WREG.
