(Memphis) – Family and friends are remembering slain basketball player Lorenzen Wright. It’s been almost two years since Wright disappeared and his decomposed body found in a grassy field in Southeast Shelby County. Tonight his family says he is not forgotten.
Wright is remembered at this vigil outside the FedEx forum as a son, father, basketball player and one who gave back to his community. His mother organized a vigil in his honor almost two years to the date he disappeared.
“Every year for his birthday and the anniversary of his death I’m going to do something every year,” Deborah Marion, Wright’s mother.
Wright’s body was found 10 days after he was last seen. An autopsy revealed he’d been shot 12 times.
“I hope that first bullet killed him because I wouldn’t have wanted my son to suffer. I hope the first bullet killed him,” said Marion.
Mayor Wharton attended the service. He says the search is still very much on for the killers.
“Let me make this clear the Lorenzen Wright case is not a cold case nor will it ever be a closed case as long as I am mayor of the great city of Memphis, Tennessee,” said Mayor A C Wharton, (D) Memphis.
“I miss my baby everyday. Everyday I miss him. One of these days they are going to find out what happened to him and everybody is going to know. It’s not going to bring him back but I’ll be relieved that somebody is paying for what they did,” said Marion.
