MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people are in the hospital fighting for their lives after being in a two-vehicle car crash in Whitehaven early Saturday morning, according to Memphis Police.

MPD said officers responded to the crash around 7 a.m. in the 1000 block of E. Shelby Drive. Police said two vehicles were involved. One vehicle struck a pole and overturned.

Witnesses on the scene said cars were drag racing, and one driver loss control and went airborne and crashed into a house. Two people were in the house at the time.

The son of the homeowners spoke to WREG-TV about the crash.

“Well over on-hundred and some miles per hour causing this one vehicle to go airborne here through here, and then he went airborne and hit my mom’s vehicle here. His vehicle went into our home and then it bounced and ricocheted off into the yard,” said Ramone Smith, the son of homeowners who were involved in the crash.

Smith says as a result of the crash, his mother was entrapped in her bedroom where a pole from the daycare next door, which was also impacted by the crash, pierced into the room.

He also says the impact was so intense, it knocked his father out of the recliner he was sitting in.

“Knocks him completely to the other side of the room,” Smith said.

Smith says miraculously both of his parents were able to walk away from the crash with little injuries. 

“I would just encourage parents and other elders in the community to kind of talk to the young people about speeding and the implications of what it can cause and what it could be,” said Smith.

Smith says this is not the first time his home has had to pay the price for speeding. Just two weeks ago, he says someone hit a fire hydrant in front of their home and kept driving. 

Memphis Police said two people were transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

It is unclear what caused the crash, and it is still an ongoing investigation.
