Whitehaven HS breaks ground on new STEM building

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As the need for more STEM workers grows, a Memphis high school is breaking ground on a brand-new STEM building.

During Wednesday’s groundbreaking, education leaders announced the ‘Herbert Stem Center’ will be devoted to science education and laboratory work.

‘We hope to change lives in spring 2025,” Whitehaven High School Principal Dr. Vincent Hunter said.”

The project costs $9 million and the money was all raised by donors including MSCS, City Council and the City of Memphis.

This is a rendering of what the Herbert STEM Center is expected to look like.

One of the largest donors was James Herbert, a Whitehaven graduate who unfortunately passed away before the groundbreaking of the school.

The school decided to name the building after him.

“We really moved the date and time so he could attend but the Lord had a different plan and called him home,” Hunter said.

For those in attendance, particularly the students, they see the new building as an opportunity for growth.

“We have dreams and this will help us broaden our horizons on choosing a career choice,” student Aniyah Hilliard said.

Principal Hunter said that the STEM facility is set to open its doors in Spring 2025.
