MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People who live in one Whitehaven neighborhood were upset trash is spilling over into their yards.

Trash cans and garbage bags lined the streets surrounding Blakebill Avenue.

“I don’t know if you can, but I can smell it now,” James Peters told WREG.

The stench in the air had some running back inside their homes.

Neighbors said their trash had not been picked up since November 19.

“I mean no one wants to live in an area that looks like a pig sty,” Peters explained.

“That’ll be two weeks and two weeks is too long for garbage to be out, especially when you’re paying for this,” another neighbor said.

Residents said the city never told them about the holiday trash pick up day.

“They did not put a notice,” a neighbor said.

A Department of Public Works spokesperson said workers put notices on trash cans, posted the information online and gave calendars to every customer.

“She insists that we were, but we were not,” Peters said.

Public works told WREG by email it is evaluating the affected area and will resolve the issue by close of business Thursday.
