MEMPHIS, Tenn. — They’re both in Memphis but for people in Whitehaven and Raleigh, they said it’s sometimes like a tale of two cities.

This week Memphis moved forward on plans to commit about $3 million in upgrades and development at what’s currently Raleigh Springs Mall.

The city said it wants to use eminent domain to buy the property and turn it into mixed use space.

That left a lot of people in Whitehaven asking about the money once promised to Southbrook Mall.

“We expect the Mayor to honor the intent of this program, and show some integrity,” Janice Banks with Southbrook told WREG.

Earlier this month the city said Southbrook wouldn’t get more than a million dollars in tax money for renovations.

“The Wharton administration is more focused on the overall Whitehaven project, continued renaissance, rather than one specific project,” Chief Administrative Officer Jack Sammons said at the time.

Friday WREG tried to learn more about the project.

Spokespeople would only say details would be available in about 10 days.

Banks made one thing very clear.

What the city does and doesn’t do in the next few months would have consequences on this year’s mayoral election.

“There is interest and people They’re paying attention,” Banks said.
