(Memphis) A wife is heartbroken after her husband of 46 years was killed while standing next to his broken-down car.

Eighty-one-year-old Eugene Divine was getting help from a Memphis officer when another car ran into them, killing Divine and injuring the officer.

“They ran over him and killed my husband,” said Ardenia Divine.

Pain and emptiness fills Divine because her husband is no longer by her side.

“I was coughing, and he said he was going to run down to Walgreens and get some cough medicine,” said Divine.

Police said Divine’s car broke down near Methodist University Hospital near Union and Bellevue.

An officer was helping him when another car ran over the officer’s foot, and then hit Divine.

The impact was so powerful, it threw him over the officer’s car.

He died within minutes.

“It took a big toll on me, because me and my sister just left from seeing my granddaddy about an hour before he got killed,” said Divine’s granddaughter, Tyronda Williams.

Divine’s family is devastated. His children and grandchildren are still numb.

“He touched so many lives around the community,” said Williams.

The pain is too much for Ardenia Divine. She says life will be hard without her soulmate.

“I don’t know what God has in plan for us next,” she said.

Two women were in the car when it hit Divine.

No charges have been filed.

Police are still trying to figure out what caused the crash.
