(Nashville, TN) After years of trying, legislation to allow wine sales in Tennessee grocery stores moved through a Senate committee.
The vote in the Senate State & Local Government Committee was 5-4 in favor of the measure.
The effort would require voter approval.
Sen. Reginald Tate, (D) of Memphis, voted “Yes” while Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, (R) of Collierville, voted “No.”
An amendment to the bill was removed that would have allowed liquor stores to sell beer, cigarettes and other items to make up for some of the money they will likely lose if the law is changed.
The bill would need approval of the full Senate and House.
