HORN LAKE, Miss. — A 65-year-old Horn Lake woman is locked up after she killed her 68-year-old fiancée.
The couple was supposed to get married Easter Sunday.
“I just cut her grass yesterday. She was telling me they were about to get married here soon,” said neighbor Alfonso Peoples.
Peoples was talking about Bernice Parker Johnson.
She’s accused of shooting and killing her fiancée James Watkins Jr.
“I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it, she’s such a sweet lady,” said Peoples.
Police said the two got into a fight late Wednesday night and Bernice shot James.
It was Bernice who called 911 and told dispatchers what she did, but by the time paramedics got to the house James was dead.
When WREG went to the home Thursday afternoon no one answered.
However neighbors described the chaos on the street moments after the shooting.
“There was about 13 cop cars out here and an ambulance,” said neighbor Dalton Jones.
People in the quiet subdivision said the couple had been together for a few years and they never heard any problems from the home before.
“Never seen them fighting or nothing like that,” explained Peoples.
For now, the Horn Lake Police Department is releasing few details- leaving neighbors with questions.
“It’s really sad to think about. I don’t know what could’ve gone wrong to cause this type of situation,” questioned Jones.
Johnson’s bail was set at $250,000.
