MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are investigating an interstate shooting that sent a woman to the hospital in critical condition early Friday morning.
According to authorities, the woman was traveling on I-240 near Poplar when two men inside a newer model GMC Yukon opened fire on her around 2:55 a.m.
The woman reportedly told police she and her passenger heard shots from the driver side of the car. Police say the victim realized she was shot when she felt a burning sensation in her back.
The victim managed drive herself to Baptist East Hospital and then was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center.
Police say at least 13 bullet holes were found on the driver side of the victim’s car. The windows of the car were also broken out.
It’s unclear what caused the shooting, but people driving in the area says it sounds like another case of road rage.
So far, there have been more than 30 interstate shootings this year.
Recently, Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings said he has been communicating with the Tennessee Highway Patrol for additional assistance on the highways.
Several people WREG spoke with say they believe a heavier presence of officers on the roadways may be what’s needed to prevent the next interstate shooting.
