MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is recovering after being attacked while hundreds of law enforcement agents were nearby.
Thankfully, she wasn’t seriously hurt, but news of her assault outside the Criminal Justice Center has many shaken up.
A woman told police she was waiting for the bus at the bus stop on Washington and Third Wednesday afternoon, when Jamaine Driver walked up to her and started what she described as “talking crazy.”
The woman tried to scoot away, distancing herself away from the stranger.
But moments later she said Driver grabbed her and started fondling her breasts.
“If anyone can walk up to you and do that to you, it’s not safe,” said Andrea Gill.
Thankfully, a Sheriff’s Deputy heard the woman screaming and rushed over to help her.
Sheriff’s Deputies detained Driver until Memphis Police got to the bus stop and arrested him.
He was charged with sexual battery.
However, news of his arrest had many women fearing they too could be a target.
“It’s horrific. I can not even imagine,” said Gill.
“I’m very uncomfortable, especially since I’m walking down here now,” said Willie Key.
In just a few minutes, WREG spotted Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies, Memphis Police Officers, and Tennessee State Troopers all circle around the block at 201 Poplar.
Many people walking around questioned why would anyone assault someone there?
“That goes back to a stupid criminal. It’s bold of him to attack a woman in this particular area at that time,” said Key.
Driver’s bond was set at $50,000.
He’s been arrested dozens of times for several different crimes including disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing.
