Woman shot, killed outside Cordova home, gunman at large

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are on the hunt for whoever shot and killed a middle-aged woman outside a Cordova home.

Police identified the woman as Susan McDonald, who was a former WREG employee.

The shooting happened Saturday morning not too far from Walnut Grove Road and Germantown Road.

Stunned, shaken and shocked, friends and neighbors couldn’t help but watch police as they combed for evidence in the picturesque and usually quiet section of Cordova.

Friends said early Saturday morning McDonald drove to the home at Ericson Road and Bazemore Road to pick up her friends for a run.

The friends said someone followed her in a different car, drove by and shot her as she pulled up in the driveway. At the time, she was talking on the phone to her friend who lives at the home.

“I was shocked that something like that would happen in this neighborhood,” neighbor Julie Nanney said.

Neighbors said the gunman got lost in the neighborhood while trying to drive away.

Many families that live in the neighborhood have surveillance cameras posted around the outside of their homes. Neighbors hope that one of the cameras captured a glimpse of the car that followed the victim into the neighborhood

“It’s seems like such a nice neighborhood,” Rick Slocum said. “You hear about shootings in Germantown and other areas. I guess the crime doesn’t have a home, it can be anywhere.”

Police blocked off the crime scene as many families went on about their days, running and cycling on nearby streets.

Slocum said he is now a little more cautious, but news of the murder a few steps from his home did not stop his family from exercising.

“You can’t live in fear, you got to live your life and enjoy the things you enjoy,” he said.

Neighbors said they hope the gunman is identified and captured soon. Friends who have known the victim for decades said they just cannot understand why this happened.

Police have not said if this deadly shooting was a random act of violence.

Investigators said a black or dark gray four-door car was seen speeding in the area around the time of the shooting, but police cannot say for sure if that car is connected to the deadly shooting.
