Woman shot, killed by Shelby County deputies

LAKELAND, Tenn. — A woman is dead after being shot by deputies in Lakeland.

WREG was told two deputies have been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation into 59-year-old Nancy Lewellyn’s death in the 10000 block of Woodland Pines West Friday.

Preliminary information suggested Lewellyn contacted 911 around noon.

“She called making some disturbing statements, threatening violence to anyone that might show up,” said Josh DeVine with the TBI.

When the three deputies arrived, the woman reportedly exited her home and brandished a weapon. She then pointed it at the law enforcement officers. That’s when two of them opened fire.

The woman died from her injuries.

Investigators said the weapon Lewellyn was carrying was a BB gun.

“Our folks are telling me the BB gun looked an awful lot like a handgun. Presumably very easy to think this was a more dangerous situation,” said DeVine.

Lewellyn’s son told me she hasn’t live at the home long — only a few weeks. As for her mental state leading up to the shooting, that’s something the TBI is now looking into.
