MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman who left her puppy inside a hot car at the Wolfchase Galleria back in July has been sentenced to two years in prison.
WREG reported on July 29, Memphis Police were called to the mall after shoppers spotted a 3-month-old terrier in distress inside a car.
They immediately got the puppy out and rushed it to a nearby veterinarian where the dog died.
According to the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County, the puppy’s internal temperature was 110 degrees, which is the maximum their thermometer would measure.
It was 99 degrees outside, and 140 degrees inside the car.
The cause of death was ruled as heat stroke and dehydration.
The owner, Alexis Cain, was sentenced to two years in prison for the crime.
She has asked to get that sentence suspended.
Cain and Charlie Parker told police the dog had been locked in the car while they went shopping.
It’s unclear how long the puppy was left alone, but we do know it was another two hours before the pair returned to their car to go home.
