HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — A mother and son from Texas were found dead in the wreckage of their small plane after it crashed near Brownsville, Tennessee, Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash of the Piper P28R. An investigator was traveling to the scene Wednesday.

Garrett said a Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the wreckage from the air after authorities received a report the night before that an aircraft was lost on radar. The plane had nosedived into Cypress Creek in rainy conditions, he said.

Garrett said the two family members were from the Houston area and were traveling to meet relatives in Murray, Kentucky. He said the mother was about 74 and her son, who owned the plane, was about 54.

The bodies were taken to Memphis for autopsy.
