(Memphis) Have you ever wondered what it takes to build your own mobile app?
Some young girls in Memphis will find out this weekend.
The Memphis Chapter of Black Girls Code is holding its third workshop this Saturday at the Benjamin Hooks Library.
Black Girls Code is a program aimed at getting girls, particularly African-American girls, interested in the fields of math, science and technology.
Right now, woman of color are under-represented in the tech industry.
Members of the local chapter want to show young black girls that there are interesting, high paying jobs available to them.
“There are so many areas of computer science where there are opportunities for a career and mobile apps are a hot area right now, ” said Meka Egweukwe.
Egweukwe, a computer engineer, says many girls are skeptical when they arrive at the workshops, but when they leave are able to go home and try some of these things on their own.
The workshop shop Saturday is for girls ages 10-12 .
Registration begins at 9am, the workshop begins at 10am.
