(NEXSTAR) – Every vote counts, but the votes across seven key battleground states are watched more closely than the rest, at least when it comes to the 2024 presidential race.
Seven states – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – had a realistic chance of going either way, which made them crucial in the paths to victory for both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
As of Thursday, Trump had secured wins in all seven.
Decision Desk HQ on NewsNation projected Trump would win North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada – enough to secure him the White House. The Associated Press and Decision Desk also called Michigan in Trump’s favor Wednesday. Finally, Decision Desk projected Arizona would go for Trump on Wednesday night.
The number of electoral votes in each states ranges from six in Nevada to 19 in Pennsylvania. A candidate doesn’t need to win all seven to become president – just enough to get them to 270 electoral votes.
Live election results in the 7 swing states
The interactive maps below show the results in each of the seven key states as they are reported to the Associated Press.
President Joe Biden won six of the seven battleground states (all but North Carolina) in 2020, but Trump fared better in 2016. When he faced Hillary Clinton, Trump won six of the seven swing states. Only Nevada went blue in 2016.
With the 2024 election, Trump outperformed both of his past races and was projected to win all seven battlegrounds.
Which swing state race was closest?
Though votes were still being tallied, the margins were once again tightest in Wisconsin, known for its ultra-close results in the past few presidential elections. With 99% of votes counted, Trump had a lead of less than 1%, or about 30,000 votes. The state was called in his favor.
The next-closest race was in fellow “Blue Wall” state Michigan, where Trump had a 1.5% lead and 82,000 votes more than Harris with 99% of ballots counted.
Of the seven states, Arizona still had the most votes to be counted. On Thursday, Trump was leading with 52% of the vote (compared to Harris’ 47%) with 69% of the votes counted.
How many electoral votes were up for grabs?
The swing states combined make up an important 93 electoral votes, but not all seven are equally valuable:
- Arizona: 11 electoral votes
- Georgia: 16 electoral votes
- Michigan: 15 electoral votes
- Nevada: 6 electoral votes
- North Carolina: 16 electoral votes
- Pennsylvania: 19 electoral votes
- Wisconsin: 10 electoral votes
