District 1 gears up for special election

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Voters in northern Mississippi will be heading to the polls in less than 24 hours to pick a replacement for Congressman Alan Nunnelee who died of brain cancer earlier this year.

Thirteen candidates are vying for the seat, and they all have their eye on the largest county in the district: Desoto County.

“DeSoto County is the determining factor, can be the determining factor in District 1,” said business owner and Desoto County resident, Robert Estes.

Estes, who ran for the congressional seat back in 2012, gave us his predictions for the upcoming election.

He said he doesn’t think they’re be a clear winner after tomorrow.

“We’ll probably have a runoff election,” he said.

He also said he liked that there were so candidates running for office because it gives everyone “a wide choice”.

 

The Circuit Clerk in DeSoto County expects 50% of its voters to turn out.

Polls open at 7 am.
