SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — As the numbers rolled in, Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump supporters across the Mid-South cheered.
Both had very strong support in the state of Tennessee.
With just 58% of the precincts in, Trump had 33% with more than 10,000 votes.
Clinton more than doubled that with 83% and nearly 50,000 votes.
Supporters of Clinton gathered in Binghampton Tuesday night to celebrate.
Most of those in attendance were everyday people, campaign workers and voters who say they’re ready for change.
County Commissioner Van Turner said the Mid-South is like home for Clinton and he expects her support to build here as the campaign continues.
Over in Cooper-Young, Bernie Sanders supporters were coming to terms with the results.
Like other supporters across the city, the Memphis for Bernie Sanders group held a gathering to watch the primary election votes come in at Cafe Ole.
About a dozen people showed up hoping their candidate would beat out fellow presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton
Regardless of the outcome here in the Volunteer state, they said they don’t see Tuesday’s primary as a defeat.
They said they’re still “Feelin’ the Bern” and hoping for a nomination.
“We’re very proud to be part of this movement. Movements don’t happen overnight. They don’t happen in one election. They happen over a long period of time, and this is just the beginning of it,” said Zachary Seagle.
A small gathering of Ted Cruz supporters gathered together at an East Memphis restaurant.
They said they still believe Cruz has a solid chance to become the alternate to Trump with his victory in Texas and by exceeding expectations in Oklahoma.
“Right now, there are only two candidates that have a path to the nomination, and one of them is Ted Cruz. Once some of these other candidates realize that they don’t have a path, we will go head to head with Donald Trump. And Ted Cruz will beat Donald Trump,” said Mick Wright.
