HERNANDO, Miss. — Campaign signs flooded the streets in DeSoto County as voters showed up to nearly 40 locations to cast their ballots.
“We have five children in the DeSoto County School system,” resident Heather Hodge said.
Hodge made it a point to vote for the county’s next superintendent.
There were four Republican candidates in the primary and no Democrats, which forced some voters to switch parties to choose who they wanted to lead the school district.
“So, it’s actually two elections running simultaneously,” said Danny Klein, the chairman of the DeSoto County Election Commission.
Election commissioners said there were 29 different ballot styles in the county based on different races. Election officials said voter turnout during elections like these are typically good.
“Historically the county-wide races every four years says 50 to 55 percent turnout,” Klein said. “So, it’s usually one of our better turnouts.”
“I think it is extremely important to let your voice be heard and to remember that a lot of people have died for the right to vote,” Hodge said.
Voters did not report any major issues at the polls.
Election commissioners said there will likely be a Republican runoff race coming up Aug. 25 for both the superintendent and supervisor positions in District 5.
