SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — A high voter turnout is expected in DeSoto County.
The circuit court clerk said the phones were ringing off the hook while people headed to the polls for the primaries in Mississippi.
Voters were calling to ask where to vote since some precincts changed.
This is the first year voters in Southaven moved to M.R. Davis Public Library. Before they were voting at City Hall, and some voters showed up at the wrong polling site.
“They do have a big sign there, but I did see a lot of cars going to the City Hall, so hopefully it’s there. I know in the voter registration package that you get, the card, it does say that it’s been moved to the library,” Nathan Randl said.
DeSoto County officials saw long lines all day. They predict 25 percent of voters will come out, which is considered high for this election.
The clerk said based on the number of absentee ballots, most people coming to the polls in DeSoto County are likely Republicans.
WREG spoke with voters on both sides.
“That’s one reason I think that Donald Trump has stood out because he’s saying things that the rest of them wouldn’t say and there’s nothing they can do to bother him,” Joe Alsbrook said.
“I kind of like Hillary, not only will she make a great president, but it will also be a time in our history for us to make history because she would be the first female president,” Terry Williams said.
DeSoto County officials said 700 of the people who voted absentee were Republican, and 100 were Democrats.
The polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
