MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Election Day is tomorrow, but you may not be able to vote at the same polling location you went to last year.

The Shelby County Election Commission closed several dozen spots across the city this year.

The county has a web page set up so you can search your address.

It is especially important to check this year because your regular polling place may no longer exist. Thirty-nine polling locations were closed this year, largely due to low voter turnout at those spots.

“Part of it was to balance the number of voters that go to each location. Part of it was to improve the facilities and their customer service,” said Robert Meyers, the chair of the Shelby County Election Commission.

Meyers said he is a bit worried it could cause some confusion as people head out to vote tomorrow.

“What will save them a lot of time is if they’ll spend five minutes on their computer and check out where their new precinct is if they have one,” he said.

Whitehaven resident Booker T. said while he wishes more locations could have stayed open, he understands the commission’s reason for closing them.

“It doesn’t make good sense to have all these places open if people aren’t coming out to vote.”

Meyers said by consolidating some polling places, “we hope [voters] have a better customer-service experience at the polls.”

“It’s very important to go vote,” Booker T. added. “People have died and fought for us to have a right to vote. So, I think everybody should vote.”

Remember to bring a valid state-issued photo ID with you as you head out to vote.
