Your winter storm game plan: Groceries, gas, leaving work early

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People in the Mid-South are stocking up at the grocery store and gas station.

The Cash Saver on Madison in Midtown was packed Tuesday as dozens of people filled up their carts.

“Milk, bread chips, and a couple of beers,” Lakisha Burkett of Memphis said.

Folks grabbed the essentials to last the next couple days.

Grocery store parking lots were packed and shelves cleared out across the Mid-South.

“We just have to be prepared for whatever comes, but I hope it passes,” Ruthie Patton of Memphis said.

With February’s freeze fresh on the mind, people are staying on top of Wednesday’s storm.

It could get nasty too, dumping ice, sleet, and snow on the Mid-South.

“If school’s out, my baby will eat up the fridge. He’ll eat up the cabinet. I’m just trying to keep food for him,” Dorothy Mcadory of Memphis said.

She got groceries while mapping out a plan for Wednesday, since she works in Southaven.

“I have a long drive. I don’t want to get out and get stranded, so probably [noon],” Mcadory, who plans on leaving work early and picking up her son on the way home, said.

She’s not alone.

“I told my coworker if it is like they say, they won’t see me,” Patton said.

“We made plans if the weather gets bad, and the streets start freezing, we are going to leave work early,” Blake Haines of Memphis said.

The emergency plan didn’t stop there. Many went ahead and filled up.

Every pump was taken at an East Memphis gas station WREG went to.

It’s important your gas tank stays full in case you get stranded.

“You just prepare, and stay in the house a couple of days,” Cheryl Green of Memphis said.

That seems to be the most popular game plan: stay home, keep warm, and turn on the TV.

“I’m going to stay inside and watch News Channel 3,” Yvonne Jackson of Memphis said.

You still have time to hit the grocery store if you haven’t yet.

Stores we talked to say no items are running low, and employees are working to keep the shelves stocked.
