MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An event to prevent youth violence in Memphis aims to keep young people off the streets and out of jail.

“Everyday when I cut on the news I would see something about youth violence and youth — just all negativity,” Artemis Williams told WREG.

Williams, who is organizing the youth Crime Prevention tour, wanted to do something positive.

“I had a vision of giving back to the community,” Williams explained.

Popular rappers Silento and I Heart Memphis will perform at the event at Whitehaven High School on Friday.

An employee with Shelby County Schools said music is one of the best ways to reach students.

“Historically we know that music and entertainment has always played a part in social movements and community change,” an SCS spokesperson said.

The event is also a push to show police officers in a better light and let children know they are here to help.

“It’s going to give us a chance to serve as mentors, friends, and even dance and have a good time with the young people,” an officer said.

Memphis police said they will have at least 60 officers at the event to make sure children are safe.

“We’ll definitely have a safe place for the kids to come and enjoy themselves, and we’re also here to educate,” another officer explained.

The overall goal is to make Memphis a better place.

The event begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the Whitehaven HS Stadium.

The cost of admission is $20.00.
