MEMPHIS, Tenn. — You hope it never happens, but one group in Memphis wants to make sure you know what to do if you ever come face to face with a carjacker.
Saturday, Mid-South Krav Maga will be offering a two-hour carjacking self-defense class.
During the class, martial arts experts will use a number of different scenarios to show participants how to safely get away from a carjacker and how to take a gun away from their attacker if they try to take them with them.
Safety experts, though, say you don’t ever want to fight someone just to save your vehicle.
“A car is not worth fighting for, but if you find yourself in a situation where you can’t just give it to them– if you’ve got a child in the car or a family member and you can’t give up your car then you need tools to know how to fight,” said Patrick Terry with Mid-South Krav Maga.
Terry says you never want to get into a car with a criminal.
He said fight them off right there and try to run away.
Of course, your best defense is to make it impossible for a carjacker to get inside your car.
Terry says keep your windows up and car doors locked when you are driving, if you come to a stoplight make sure you leave enough room between your car and the car in front of you to allow you to drive away if you have to, and always be aware of your surroundings.
The carjacking self-defense class is this Saturday, June 14, from 2-4 p.m. For more information, click here.
