Shelby County Schools is now without a superintendent.

Memphis City Schools is without a permanent superintendent.

The soon to be merged school system has no superintendent.

In an emotionally charged meeting last night, the Unified School Board approved a buyout of John Aitken’s contract.

Aitken made the decision himself to step down, and says he does not want to be considered for the superintendent position in a new Unified school District.

School Board Chair Billy Orgel and Board Member Kevin Woods were at last night’s meeting.

Today they talked to us about the search for a unified superintendent.
