MLK Jr. holiday events Monday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The National Civil Rights Museum will welcome thousands of visitors into its newly renovated exhibits.

Not only will the museum commemorate Dr. King’s birthday, it will also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the voting rights act with the theme “Marching to Freedom.”

The museum will be open from 8am to 6pm, admission is five dollars.

If you bring canned goods for the Mid-South Food Bank, the price will be reduced to just three dollars.

Students 13 and older in the Memphis area can see the film ‘Selma’ for free.

Students need to show any school I.D. or recent report card to see the movie at the Majestic, Paradiso or Southaven locations of the Malco theatre chain.

The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis has set up a fund to accept donations that would allow more students to see the film.

Donations can be sent to the Selma Student Fund, 1900 Union Ave., Memphis, TN 38104.

The film is rated PG-13.

A blood drive is being held by Lifeblood Monday until 3 p.m. at the National Civil Rights Museum.  Donors are admitted for free, as well as three family members.

Shelby Farms will hold a day of service in honor of Dr. King Monday until noon.

A day of service will also be held at MLK High School by the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals. The event starts at  10:00 a.m.
