SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Children in Shelby County could now have the tools they need to become strong readers.

City and county officials teamed up with PeopleFirst Partnership to launch the Early Childhood Education Plan Thursday.

The program is meant to make sure all kids get the support they need to become proficient readers by third grade.

Officials said less than 40 percent of our children read at a third-grade level.

“If they’re not reading proficiently at third grade, it is very difficult for them to ever catch up and become proficient at reading, which is a fundamental piece of education for all of our citizens.”

The plan was approved last December.
