The man accused of killing two-year-old Laylah Washington and his cousin, who police say drove the getaway car, faced a judge Wednesday.

Police said someone called Crime Stoppers in June of 2018 and accused Tylan McCray, 21, of firing the fatal shot. Police matched a gun found on him in a later arrest to the gun type used in Laylah’s murder.

Attorney William Massey’s office has agreed to take on Tylan McCray as a client.

It’s been one year since Laylah Washington was killed while sitting in the back of a car and investigators are no closer to finding the killers.

“This is one of those cases that will forever haunt this city, this community,” said Major Lambert Ross, with the Memphis Police Department.

“I just wish someone would come forward,” said Laylah Washington’s mother.

Laylah Washington’s killer has been on the loose for months, leaving her mother without closure.
