Tennessee Education Commissioner Candice McQueen says school districts can decide whether student assessment scores will be included in student grades as long as the scores don’t lower final grades.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam is coming to Shelby County as part of a statewide tour to hear ideas to improve the state’s problem-plagued elementary and secondary school online testing process.

This spring’s shutdown of online TNReady tests was caused by software problems and not a deliberate attack by hackers as previously thought, the Tennessee Department of Education said Tuesday.

A main fiber cable between Tennessee and Georgia was cut Thursday morning, according to a tweet from the state.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do in our high schools,” SCS Superintendent Dorsey Hopson said. “The average student is not graduating college ready.”

The test has cost students and teachers time and taxpayers millions of dollars.

Some Tennessee schools reported problems logging in to the online TNReady testing system Monday, but state education officials said the issues were not widespread and were resolved.

State education officials say a “deliberate attack” against a software vendor is causing problems with TNReady online testing.
