For the first time in almost a year, the Memphis City Council finally received an update on the sexual assault kit backlog after WREG started asking questions.

A 68-year-old preacher convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl has been sentenced to 18 years in prison without the possibility of parole, the district attorney’s office said. 

The Memphis City Council is now demanding updates again on the sexual assault kit testing backlog.

After hundreds of cases began moving through courts again, Memphis City Council members stopped getting regular updates on their progress. 

Several months after escaping from the state penitentiary and allegedly killing a prison administrator, Curtis Watson has been indicted on 15 counts, including first-degree murder, aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and felony escape.
